PROTO-PUNK(1965-1975)Proto-punk emerged in the mid-to-late 1960s and early 1970s primarily in the United States, serving as a raw, aggressive precursor to the punk rock movement that followed. Driven by garage rock rebellion, avant-garde sensibilities, and gritty lyricism, pioneering acts like The Stooges, MC5, and The Velvet Underground rejected the polished production of mainstream rock in favor of high-energy, distortion-heavy soundscapes. The genre reached its commercial and artistic peak between roughly 1969 and 1973, a window defined by landmark releases such as The Stooges' Fun House and the New York Dolls' self-titled debut. Although these bands often achieved limited mainstream success at the time, their ferocious sound, confrontational stage presence, and DIY ethos laid the essential groundwork for the global punk explosion of the late 1970s.
